https://red.reynalddrouhin.net/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/lithopolis-capture.mp4

Lithopolis is a generative territory collectively constructed through Internet connections. Each visitor introduces a presence: their IP address is translated according to a fixed rule into a unique monolith. The same address always produces exactly the same form, which takes its place among those already present.

The city is drawn by no one. It results neither from a pre-existing plan nor from a composition decided in advance. It gradually takes shape, connection after connection, through the accumulation of anonymous presences. The network thus produces its own territory and retains a spatial memory of those who have passed through it.

Lithopolis does not seek to represent the Internet or visualize its data. An IP address contains neither architecture nor form. These emerge only when technical data is subjected to a translation protocol. This passage from address to geometry forms the principle of the project: the protocol is no longer merely what enables the work to function, it becomes its material.

The resulting territory is stable, but not static. Phenomena move through it, react to network activity and to the presence of visitors, then gradually fade. The protocol itself cannot be altered; only its phenomena can be disturbed. The structure remains while its manifestations make an invisible activity perceptible.

The same city can be explored and interpreted in several ways. Depending on the viewpoint or mode of representation, it becomes cartography, architecture, landscape, or abstraction. These are not different territories: the data and forms remain the same, only their visual translation changes. The project thus reveals the gap between data and the representations that can be produced from it.

This construction also has a sonic dimension. The monoliths form a spatialized acoustic landscape that changes according to the visitor’s position and movement. Seeing and hearing become two ways of exploring the same structure, without either claiming to provide a definitive representation of it.

Lithopolis does not represent a community. No faces, names, or declared identities appear within it. The territory is the consequence of presences that do not know one another and may never meet, yet whose successive connections nevertheless construct a shared space. The network infrastructure, usually invisible behind the uses it enables, thus becomes landscape, memory, and collective place.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[37,69,4
851,848,842,640,853,145,791,17,849,72,841,818,850,845,793,428,555,844,103,496,509,319,108,417,854,331,265,796,797,8,137,840,798,691,44,231,10,528,800,522,51,847,846,769,802,856,772,163,678,852,574,855,843,805,946,82
post-1403","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-installation","category-internet","category-photographie","tag-acoustique","tag-activite","tag-adresse","tag-algorithme","tag-anonymat","tag-architecture","tag-cartographie","tag-cite","tag-coexistence","tag-collectif","tag-connexion","tag-corpus","tag-croissance","tag-densite","tag-determinisme","tag-donnee","tag-donnees","tag-emergence","tag-espace","tag-evolution","tag-exploration","tag-forme","tag-generatif","tag-generation","tag-geographie","tag-geometrie","tag-identite","tag-infrastructure","tag-interaction","tag-internet","tag-ip","tag-lithopolis","tag-lithotheque","tag-materialisation","tag-memoire","tag-monolith","tag-monolithe","tag-navigation","tag-net-art","tag-numerique","tag-paysage","tag-perturbation","tag-phenomene","tag-presence","tag-protocole","tag-regle","tag-representation","tag-reseau","tag-son","tag-spatialisation","tag-structure","tag-temps-reel","tag-territoire","tag-traduction","tag-vert-phosphore","tag-visualisation
["GET
