The same road landscape was recorded on July 14 at two different times, first between 5:25 p.m. and 5:55 p.m., then between 11:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., and presented in split screen. At startup, the DVD also offers random access to one of two viewpoints.

The device thus brings together two temporalities of the same place. Day and night, natural light and darkness, circulation and repetition coexist within the same visual space. The road remains almost unchanged while the conditions of perception are transformed.

Highway refers to René Magritte’s The Empire of Light, a series in which a nocturnal scene and a daytime sky coexist within the same image. Where Magritte produces this coexistence through painting, Highway achieves it through recording and editing: two moments actually separated in time become simultaneous on screen.

The motorway appears less as a subject than as a structure of repetition. Vehicles enter and leave the frame, trajectories follow one another, and the same gestures seem to repeat indefinitely. Movement, normally associated with change, paradoxically becomes one of the forms of everyday routine.

The split screen thus transforms an ordinary journey into a temporal experience. The point is no longer simply to move from one place to another, but to observe what remains and what changes when the same space is crossed at different moments.

Between landscape, circulation, and duration, Highway superimposes two presents that never actually coexisted. Editing produces an impossible temporality: the same place experienced simultaneously by day and by night.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[52
62,629,180,1002,630,116,894,341,631,323,65,165,625,627,1005,622,178,27,624,270,1004,213,142,551,12,51,514,632,623,134,179,1003,887,626,158,1006,487,214,322,628,294,98,19,281,87
post-202","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-video","tag-aleatoire","tag-aller-retour","tag-autoroute","tag-banlieue","tag-boulot","tag-chemin","tag-circulation","tag-deplacement","tag-dodo","tag-duree","tag-dvd","tag-ecran","tag-empire-des-lumieres","tag-extrait","tag-hasard","tag-joinville-le-pont","tag-jour","tag-lumiere","tag-magritte","tag-maison","tag-montage","tag-mouvement","tag-nuit","tag-paris","tag-passage","tag-paysage","tag-perception","tag-quotidien","tag-reference","tag-repetition","tag-route","tag-routine","tag-simultaneite","tag-son-stereo","tag-split-screen","tag-surrealisme","tag-temporalite","tag-temps","tag-trajet","tag-trajets","tag-travail","tag-video","tag-ville","tag-vitesse","tag-voiture
["GET
