LITHOPOLIS

LITHOPOLIS

Lithopolis is a generative city built from Internet connections.

Each visitor automatically adds a new presence to the territory. Their IP address is translated by a fixed rule into a unique monolith. The same address always produces exactly the same form.

The city is drawn by no one. It builds itself to the rhythm of connections, one presence after another, and keeps the memory of their appearance. It thus becomes the spatial memory of a network protocol.

The territory is entirely governed by this protocol. The monoliths are neither drawn nor edited; they are produced by the rules that generate them. The protocol cannot be altered; only its phenomena can be disturbed. A moving presence continuously drifts through the city. It reveals the network's activity, responds to the passage of visitors, deforms under their gestures, then gradually recovers its balance. The territory's structure remains unchanged; only the protocol's manifestations stay sensitive to interaction.

Lithopolis offers several readings of a single structure. Map, landscape, architecture or plan reveal different interpretations of the same territory. The data remains identical; only its plastic translation changes.

The territory can also be heard. Each monolith emits a spatialized sound signature whose position matches its place in the city. Moving through it, the visitor composes their own soundscape, made of near and distant presences. The perturbation has its own sound, distinct from the monoliths': an unstable noise that accompanies the network's variations and responds to interaction without ever altering the territory's structure.

The address itself is never shown or transmitted: only the form, the color and an approximate location compose the territory.
