System est une installation lumineuse issue de System Failure, réalisée en 2008 sous la forme d’un néon vert clignotant portant les mots « SYSTEM FAILURE ». Endommagée quelques années plus tard, l’œuvre perd accidentellement le mot « FAILURE ». À partir de 2014, seul « SYSTEM » demeure.
L’accident accomplit ainsi littéralement l’énoncé initial : System Failure connaît sa propre défaillance. Mais cette disparition produit un retournement. Le système ne s’efface pas avec la panne ; il lui survit. Ce qui reste est précisément le mot « SYSTEM », isolé, clignotant, débarrassé de l’annonce explicite de sa chute.
L’œuvre se construit dès lors dans cet écart entre langage et événement. « Failure » n’a plus besoin d’être écrit puisque la défaillance a eu lieu. Elle est passée du texte à la matière même de l’œuvre. L’accident devient processus, et la détérioration une forme involontaire de réécriture.
Le vert lumineux et le clignotement convoquent l’imaginaire des interfaces informatiques, du signal, de l’alerte et de la science-fiction. Mais System ne désigne plus seulement un système technologique. Isolé, le mot peut renvoyer à tout ensemble organisé, économique, politique, écologique ou social, dont la permanence repose précisément sur sa capacité à absorber ses propres crises.
Entre panne et persistance, disparition et continuité, System pose finalement une question simple : que reste-t-il d’un système après sa défaillance ? Ici, le système reste.

ystem is a light installation derived from System Failure, created in 2008 as a flashing green neon sign displaying the words “SYSTEM FAILURE.” A few years later, the work was accidentally damaged and the word “FAILURE” disappeared. From 2014 onward, only “SYSTEM” remained.
The accident thus literally fulfilled the original statement: System Failure experienced its own failure. Yet this disappearance produces a reversal. The system does not vanish with the breakdown; it survives it. What remains is precisely the word “SYSTEM,” isolated, flashing, stripped of the explicit announcement of its collapse.
The work is therefore constructed within the gap between language and event. “Failure” no longer needs to be written because the failure has already occurred. It has moved from the text into the material reality of the work itself. The accident becomes a process, and deterioration becomes an involuntary form of rewriting.
The green light and its flashing rhythm evoke the visual language of computer interfaces, signals, warnings, and science fiction. Yet System no longer refers only to a technological system. Isolated, the word can refer to any organized structure, economic, political, ecological, or social, whose persistence may depend precisely on its ability to absorb its own crises.
Between breakdown and persistence, disappearance and continuity, System ultimately asks a simple question: what remains of a system after its failure? Here, the system remains.
